Istanbul Weather
Istanbul is a great city to visit at any time of the year! But when you choose to visit will probably depend on why you’re coming. If you’re visiting for pleasure – whether it’s for sightseeing or shopping perhaps – you can come whenever you choose! This guide to Istanbul’s weather should help you decide.
Summer in Istanbul
Istanbul is most popular with leisure tourists during the summer months when both the days and nights are warm. Many of the hotels in Istanbul have swimming pools so if you fancy a day or two lounging around a pool and doing a spot of sunbathing, choose one which has an outdoor pool rather than an indoor one!
July and August are the warmest months when the average daytime high is 28C (82.4F) and the low is 19C (66F). You may find that the nights are a little warm for you so make sure you choose a hotel in Istanbul which has air conditioning in the room.

Humidity is usually quite high in Istanbul, making the summer temperatures feel higher than they are. For this reason you may prefer to visit in early or late summer when the temperatures are a little lower. In September, for example, the daytime average high is a pleasant 24C (75F), however if you’re venturing out from your hotel in Istanbul in the evening you may want an extra layer as the average low drops down to a mild 16C (61F).
Winter in Istanbul
Although Istanbul is often classified as having a Mediterranean climate, winters are slightly harsher than in some southern Mediterranean cities.
Snow is quite common in Istanbul, usually falling some time between December and March and it can be heavy when it does fall for a week or two at a time. Having said that, Istanbul is a wonderful city in the winter too, and compared with some European cities, the temperatures are quite mild. March has an average high of 11C (52F), whilst November is 14C (57F).
Many of the higher end hotels in Istanbul have their own spas and Turkish baths which are definitely a well deserved treat for winter visitors. Even if your Istanbul hotel doesn’t have a Turkish bath (or Hammas) there are plenty of public ones which you can try!

Spring and Autumn in Istanbul
Depending on whether you prefer hot or cooler weather, maybe the best time to book your hotel in Istanbul would be spring or autumn when the temperatures are mild – not too hot, but not too cold either!
